My name is Owen Ibbotson, and I was born on January 8, 2005. Over the past 13 years, I have dedicated my life to the sport of hockey, and I believe that my journey and commitment make me a valuable candidate for your college hockey program.
My hockey journey began at a young age, and I have consistently played at a high level throughout my career. For the past nine years, I proudly represented the Toronto Young Nationals AAA organization (GTHL), and currently, I am in my second year playing for the North York Rangers Junior A team (OJHL). My dedication to the sport has not wavered, and I graduated in 2023 from Northern Secondary High School as an Ontario Scholar (Honour Roll).
From a young age, I set my sights on following the NCAA route to achieve my hockey dreams. Despite facing early challenges with injuries, I remained determined to overcome them and continued to develop as a player. A pivotal moment in my hockey journey occurred when I transitioned from playing defense to becoming a forward during my U-14 year with the Toronto Nationals. During my time with the Toronto Nationals, we achieved remarkable success, winning two city championships and one OHF championship.
One of the aspects that define my playing style is my physical, hard-nosed approach combined with speed and skill. I take immense pride in my down-low puck control and my shot, always striving to contribute both offensively and defensively. Growing up as a defenseman, I understand the importance of a strong defensive game, and I make it my priority to ensure that goals are not scored when I am on the ice.
Beyond my performance on the ice, I consider myself a leader in the locker room. As I enter my second year with the North York Rangers, I recognize the importance of guiding and mentoring the younger players on the team.
My work ethic is unwavering. I view every moment at the rink as an opportunity to improve, whether it's on the ice or in the gym. I am dedicated to being the hardest worker and pushing myself to reach my full potential.
Throughout my hockey journey, I have had the privilege of learning from various coaches, whom I now consider friends and mentors. I am highly coachable and am never hesitant to ask questions to further develop my skills.
Despite my rigorous hockey schedule, I maintained Honor Roll status in the classroom during my high school years, even while missing many afternoons for hockey-related commitments. As I pursue my dream of combining college education with hockey, I am prepared to continue my studies through online classes while working two jobs outside of hockey.
One of my jobs includes working as a skate sharpener at Skatescribe, which not only provides valuable experience but also the perk of free skate sharpening. Additionally, I work at the Barn Burner gym, where I assist younger athletes with their shooting and skating skills.
In conclusion, my ultimate dream has always been to attend college while continuing to play hockey at the highest level possible. I am driven to push myself academically and athletically, and I am eager to find the right college that offers both a challenging academic environment and competitive hockey program. College represents an opportunity for me to fulfill my dreams and make a lasting impact on and off the ice. I look forward to discussing how I can contribute to your college hockey program and excel in the classroom.
Sincerely,
Owen Ibbotson
