I grew up with the ball at my feet since the age of 3 and have been kicking it around the house to this day. My mom signed me up for all sports but soccer spoke to me, almost like I was meant to play the beautiful game. Throughout my 12 years of playing, I believe soccer is a game that takes dedication, determination, and hard work and I am positive that I will give you all three and more. When it comes to this stage of the game, there is no time to mess up, you either have it or you don't and this has been my life long dream to continue and pursue the game I love for another four years.
I attend a very academic Rye High School in Rye, NY and I am a sophomore with a 3.9 GPA (4.0 weighted). I played JV in my freshman year and started. I then grew to earn a starting sport on my varsity team. I was a playmaker and distributor in the midfield and this season alone we were Leauge, Section and Regional champions and lost in the state semifinals. Our final rankings were 3rd in the state and 89th in the country. I also play for a very intense club team, FC Somers Arsenal where we are 4th in the state, 11th in the region and 11th nationally ranked. I play Center Mid but I am versatile and can adapt to any other position on the field whether it's in the defense line or forward. I'm heavily involved with my school participating in multiple clubs where I am a social coordinator and help out in the community by being a camp counselor and have a job at The barely house, a restaurant located in my town where I am a waiter/busboy
I've been told that my competitiveness has gotten me to where I am today, I don't like to lose. I feel like it's made me work harder and train more to be better than the person I am competing a spot with. However, I am also a teammate, I've bonded with every single one of my teammates this season. I thought of them as brothers and you leave not one of your brothers behind. What I've learned from the beautiful game in the past several years is learning how to become a better person. Through winning multiple cups, tournaments, and games to losing in the state semifinal, it has shown me to continue to keep playing. One game does not determine your whole career, it should just make you want to keep going.
School has been my number one priority throughout my life, striving to get good grades to become a successful young man. I have always wanted to go to a good college academically and athletically. Managing both multiple honor classes, varsity and club practice has taught me time management. Over the years I have become less of a procrastinator because I feel better at my 9:00 practice knowing all my work is done. I am a hardworking student earning national junior honor society and high honor roll in the classroom. I put just as much effort into school as in sports and it reflects on my transcript and game.
Sincerely,
Michael Desmond
