Soccer has put me through a lot in the 10 years I have played. I have had the honor of representing the United States in the 2019 Mundialito Youth Club World Cup, but it hasn’t been all clear skies in those 10 years.
In 2020 I faced my first major injury when I had a growth plate injury that sidelined me for 3 months. I continued to watch and study the game during this time so that when I came back in January to join my team for futsal season, I was able to bag over 50 goals. It wouldn’t be all smiles for long when COVID shut everything down and I was forced out of my good form. After everything opened again I switched clubs and was put in LB for the first time. It only took 3 games into the season to strain the I.T. band on the same knee that I injured in 2020. The injury put me out for another 3 months. I was devastated by the injury but continued to stay motivated to watch and improve my mental game. I came back and my coach at the time put me in LM until I earned a starting spot as a #9. That summer a coaching change took place and I had to adapt to a new system, which took a lot of work and strain on my legs. I was learning the new system quickly until a familiar pain came back to the same knee as always. Enraged by what would turn out to be an overuse injury, I pulled myself from the sport entirely for a year. I picked the sport again after I repeated my freshman year to play for my school team. I had to relearn what I knew before and after that year as the starting ST on the varsity team, I won Offensive Player of the Year for my school and a spot on the all-conference team after bagging 11 goals and 10 assists in 21 games.
In the classroom, I hold myself to an expectation to maintain straight a’s. This expectation has led me to my induction to the National Honors Society at the start of my Sophomore year, and the privilege to be on the A Honor Roll.
Thanks for your time,
Rylan Rosenfeld
