Joseph Tonna '22 Recruiting Profile

My name is Joseph Xavier Tonna and I am the Captain of the Whitman Whitman High School Swim Team and a member of Team Suffolk Swim Club. I have earned a 3.7 GPA and fully expect to make the most of my college education both athletically and academically. I am interested in a Division 1 swim program and want to major in business with a strong desire to eventually start & own my own company.

I have been swimming for Team Suffolk Swim Club since I was 6 years old. The sport, teammates and coaches have been a very important and foundational part of my life. 

My freshman and sophomore year of varsity I swam for St. Anthony’s High School. In 2019 I won the Catholic School NY State Championships in the 200 Free and placed  second in the 500 Free. I also qualified for the NYS Championships where St. Anthony’s won back to back championships.

In my junior year I decided to go back to public school at Walt Whitman High School. After the COVID shortened high school swim season, NYS Championships were canceled, I finished 2nd in Counties 100 Free and received team MVP. After last year’s HS swim season I decided to leave swimming and play varsity football instead. My junior football season was this past Spring, because of COVID, and this past Fall, where we won a Suffolk County Championship. 

I have now rededicated myself to swimming. Making up for lost time, I’m swimming hard for both my HS swim team and for my club team. My coaches see that I am quickly making up for lost time in the pool and are confident, as am I, that my best times are sure to come. This year our HS swim team went undefeated 7-0 in duel meets and we’re all working hard to win both the County and States Championships. I am passionate about swimming, I am passionate about leading through example, I am passionate about winning!
