I would be a great asset to a team because I am willing to put in the effort and time it takes to get better. I’ve been having my swim meets video taped since I was 11. After each meet, I watch those videos to see how I can improve or fix my swim. I also feel that I show leadership in the pool. I often lead the lane during drills. In Varsity, I’m often asked to demonstrate a drill or help some of the more novice swimmers.
In terms of character, what sets me apart is my ability to relate to people of all abilities. I have a ten year old sister with Autism, and I work with people with disabilities during my time volunteering at the SPLASH program, which provides swim instruction and training to Special Olympic team members. I’ve also helped raise autism awareness by fundraising and walking for Autism Speaks with my family as part of “Team Audrey” each year.
I have my Red Cross Lifeguard Certification, and I hope to work as a lifeguard this summer as well. It’s a big responsibility, but one which I will hopefully excel. My goal is to eventually coach the youth summer team where I got my start as a swimmer when I was very young.
In terms of academics, I feel my strength is in knowing where I excel and when I need to seek out help from teachers. I’ve taken on some honors courses, and I am scheduled to take a couple of college level courses next year. It’s all about balancing sports and school. I think maintaining that balance and proactive approach will help me succeeded in college.
