I have been a competitive swimmer since I was 10 years old and I have loved every minute of it. In looking back over the years, my best memories are at the pool. There have been many triumphs and defeats at the pool. Sometimes the clock was my friend and sometimes it was my greatest enemy. Through it all, I have learned the value of hard work, the value of setting goals and the incredible feeling of realizing those goals at the end of a very long training road. Most recently, I qualified for the Canadian Junior Olympic Trials in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 back, 200 back. After struggling last year, it was an amazing feeling to see the clock and know that I reached my goal not because of luck but it was because I didn't give up; because I got up every day and swam; because I worked with my coach, listened to my coach and put in the sweat (and sometimes tears).
Swimming is more than just an individual sport to me too. At the end of the day, my swim team is my family too. I love cheering them on and earning points to help the team reach its goals. Recently, my team, the Orangeville Otters won the Regional Championships. It was the first time in the club's history that it every achieved this goal. I am so proud to have helped contribute to that win. I was the top points earner that meet, along with many of my senior team members and to know that our efforts helped our coach and team earn that honour is really special.
I take those lessons and use them every day in everything I do, especially at school. I work hard at school and love to achieve the same level of success at school as I do at the pool. Currently I hold a 3.80 GPA and an A average in school. I am focusing on math and science courses like Functions, Calculus, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Like with my sports training, I ask for help, I listen to my teachers and I practice/study until I get it right. I love science and math and look forward to studying it at university.
I also like to give back to my community. I am a Level 2 Official with Swim Ontario and will volunteer at junior and development meets as a Time Keeper or Judge of Strokes and Turns. I like working on the pool deck and helping little swimmers under the age of 12 in their meets. I am also a certified life guard and I am working on becoming a swim instructor. In my spare time, I participate in triathlons over the summer and also volunteer at the Kids of Steel triathlons where I help young triathletes during their races.
At the end of the day, if you remember me for one thing, I hope that is that I am a determined, hard-working student athlete who loves the water.
