Since I first slipped on my first hand me down running shoes, I fell in love with the process of running. I was able to get lost in the rhythm of my feet, embracing each breath. During my first competitive season, my idea of running flipped on its head. Everyone obsessed over times, mileage and shoes, watches and nutrition, but my priorities lay elsewhere. While most focused on what they could buy to become faster, I was concerned with what I could do, and who I could be.
My commitment is consistent. I understand that the appreciation of small gains is what generates success in athletics. In the book Atomic Habits, an elite coach is quoted stating that, "the greatest threat to success is boredom." He explains that the most successful athletes are the ones who overcome the repetitive and menial nature of everyday training, and in no sport does that apply more than running. The same loops, same trails, same roads, boredom can't slow me down.
I am relentlessly building my discipline away from class and practice, through my commitment to the gym, and my tendency to seek out challenges. I am passionate about challenging myself, whether it be through an extra long sauna session, a cold water plunge in the dead of a New England winter, completing 200 pushups every morning, or any other trials and tribulations that come to mind. Beyond that, I work on fulfilling my insatiable intellectual half as well. I am a fervent reader, always with an earbud in listening to an audiobook. I take the time to expand the depths of my mind through high-level debates and conversations with peers and mentors.
I train year-round in pursuit of my goals, never allowing days off except for 1 week between seasons. I work hard to encourage my teammates and guide the future of Newburyport's programs, attaining the role of captain, and a distinguished leader alongside others on my teams. I put my team first, my individual achievements in the sport are empty without team success. Success doesn't always mean winning. If everyone is made to feel that they're contributing, and passionate about their improvement and growth, that may still be a successful team.
Off the track and in the classroom, my work ethic doesn't waiver. I have maintained a 4.0 unweighted GPA, taking the highest-level classes available to me. I maintain an excellent relationship with all my peers, as well as my teachers, hoping to enhance the environment and community. I'm committed to my academics and athletics equally, and I do not make sacrifices toward either side. When a box on my to-do list needs to be checked, consider it done.
My endless pursuit of the extraordinary is what defines me. I am in search of a college where I will be challenged in all aspects, so I can continue to grow and develop as an individual, as a leader, as an athlete, and as a student.
