Joining the cross country team at my high school has been one of the most impactful decisions I made in my life and my participation in the sport of running has really shaped who I am today. I started running in 6th grade at the International School of Basel, located in Basel, Switzerland. My older brother was on the team and convinced me to join. Being on the team kindled my love for the sport. In 7th grade, I was the Swiss International School champion in cross country and competed at the European International School championships in track and field. With this start, I learned that I am able to push myself to succeed and be the best athlete I can be. After becoming hooked on running in Switzerland, I gave up my hockey skates for running spikes when I moved to Minnesota.
At Benilde St. Margaret's High School, being on the cross country and track teams have really helped me to succeed in both running and in school. Through training, I have learned the value of discipline and dedication and seen the results of hard work and I have applied these skills in the classroom. When I was in middle school, I succeeded because I was pretty fast and a competitive person. In the last three years, focussed training and motivational coaching have allowed me to reach my goals each season, including dropping over 30 seconds off my PR in the section meet to qualify for the state cross country championships. I am eager to continue training in college to see how far I can go and what I can achieve.
Running has also helped be grow as a person and a leader. My teammates are my friends and we push each other every day. Being part of this team has proven to me that supporting others is as important to me as my own training. I have been given the privilege to lead the cross country, track and nordic ski teams as a captain. When I was a short, little 8th grader at a new school, I looked up to the senior leaders on the cross country team. I love the opportunity to teach and train with the new, younger runners and help them develop and see what they can achieve. I hope to join a college team with the same spirit and support.
