My love for running started when I competed in a mile competition when I was nine years old. My mom encouraged me to go on some runs with her while she was training for a 5k, and I entered a mile fun run at one of her races. I ran the mile in 6:49 and never looked back. In no time, I was competing in 5k's and eventually, I started running competitively for a club team when I was in 6th grade. Since then, I've competed and trained year-round at the middle school, high school, and (USATF) club level.
Competition and success would be enough for most runners my age, but I am driven to succeed and overcome obstacles for another reason. When I was 9 months old, I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Most would view living with diabetes as an unrelenting challenge, having to deal with the high blood sugars and low blood sugars, constant monitoring, and potential health complications. I view life with diabetes as a motivator. My disease keeps me grounded, disciplined, and drives my will to succeed.
I believe I possess the integrity, character and leadership skills necessary to be a contributing team member at the next level. This season I was honored to be selected as team captain by my high school cross country team and coaches. I've also participated in my high school's Marine Corps JROTC unit for 3 years serving as Cadet of the Year (2016), and the program has provided a tremendous foundation for leadership, motivational, and disciplined skill development.
Realizing my goals and aspirations to compete at the collegiate level would be a dream for me. I know that I have the skills, abilities, and will to succeed to be a well-rounded student athlete and leader in your program at the next level.
