Though winning the 4x400 at the Texas 6a state meet as a Sophmore is one major highlight of my athletic career to date, the botched hand-off between me (third leg) and the second leg of my 4x100 relay a couple of hours prior taught me more about competing for my team than winning the race ever would. Being put in this position helped me see how selfish dwelling on the mistake would be; looking at the rest of my team-mates' faces, it was clear they were preparing for the next race. After this event, the idea that track is a team sport took on new meaning to me; not only appreciating team chemistry but also realizing that when you compete for something higher than you, success tends to follow.
