"Issie has been awarded 'Wittiest' and 'Most Likely to Publish a Witty, Intelligent, Hilariously - Satirical article, on a Pressing Issue or Current Event'."
- Coach Delzio (2022 Softball Award Night Dinner - Individual Superlatives)
If you were to ask my family, friends, coaches, and teammates to describe me, they would say I am a leader, I am intelligent, I have grit, I am coachable, and I am extremely well-rounded. And while I do tend to lead on and off the field, maintain a 4.0 GPA, have to ability to catch four games in one day, never take criticism personally, and participate in various programs, jobs, and hobbies, what makes me different from the other athletes on this site? What makes me stand out is my unique, and ever-present sense of humor.
The sentence I quoted at the top of this statement is from my Varsity Coach, Mrs. Lisa Delzio. She mentioned that ever since I was "itty-bitty" I always had some little joke to crack, or a well-timed comment to mention in our huddles. This whit I have inherited serves me incredibly well, as it allows me to get along with anyone. People like funny people. I easily make friends, and grow very close with my coaches and teachers. This sense of humor allows me to build long lasting friendships with my teammates, or short-lived, professional relationships with umpires.
I participated in a National Tournament in Nashville, Tennessee this summer. The word "Hot" doesn't begin to describe the temperature that we were playing in. "Volcanic" would be the better term. After a game in 108 degree heat, the umpire I had been working with thanked me, saying "All your little comments kept me alive back there." I saw her three more times after that, to which I was greeted by name, and thanked again. I have had many, many interactions similar to that one and I take extreme pride in my ability to make someone's day just a little bit better with a trait that comes so naturally to me.
This sarcasm is a vital part of my personality. I wouldn't be myself without it.
If you are looking for a player with a kind of universal likability that also doesn't allow a single low pitch to get by, I am the recruit for you. If you're looking for a player to brighten up the field, but also smack the skin off the ball, I am the recruit for you. Bottom-line is: I make the environment I am in a positive one, and those acts of "keeping it light" with humor makes every game, practice, or team dinner more energizing and productive for everyone.
Thank you.
