During my three years as a Varsity player, I've had the chance to grow not just as a player but most importantly as a leader. This year I was voted captain, which I've been preparing for since Freshman year. I have watched some incredible people take on the role before me, and from them I absorbed everything I could. I was able to prepare for changes I wanted to make in the way our team played together. Actually being captain was an adjustment. Suddenly, I was officially a leader and wondered if my teammates would respect me in the role. Now that the season has concluded, I know that my teammates have appreciated my leadership and I have earned their respect.
The mental factor in basketball is the greatest challenge in my view. The biggest accomplishment so far in my highschool career has been winning the regional title my Freshman year. As the only first year student on the team, I didn't have many minutes on the court. Because we haven't repeated as a regional winner in my sophomore or junior year, I question my impact on the team. How can I contribute in a way that earns us another title? What I've come to realize is that basketball is the ultimate team sport. My teammates have been the reason for any of my individual successes. It's the chemistry we create together that matters. When I look ahead to college basketball, I consider that the number one factor: a very close team with a program that emphasizes the bonds between players and coaches. I wholeheartedly believe that solid relationships are the key to creating a successful team. I am more than ready to join and lead that team!
In addition to a strong work ethic in basketball, I bring the same work ethic to academics. I am taking advanced placement courses and have earned a weighted grade point average of 4.57. I am very interested in psychology and will choose that as a major. I look forward to the college experience because I will be choosing courses that truly interest and support my career objectives.
