My name is Cadence Xiong and I am in the class of 2023. I currently attend West Bend East High School and have played as the starting point guard on the varsity team for the past 2 years.
I think I am a good candidate for your team because I know what it takes to be the best and I will always put in 100% at every practice and game. Being Hmong, it's not common for girls in our culture to play sports. In our culture, only boys are encouraged to play sports while the girls are expected to stay home to cook and clean. Lucky for me, my parents have always supported me to play sports. I've dreamt of playing college basketball ever since I was a little kid. I started playing basketball in 2nd grade and have been playing ever since. I know its not common to see Hmong girls play basketball, so I want to inspire other Hmong girls and show my community that girls can succeed with playing basketball just as well as boys can. I am dedicated and have the drive to succeed. I am coachable and want to learn more to become a better me.
The best part of my game is my offense. I am able to create for others and not only that but myself as well. Growing up I've learned how to use my height and speed as an advantage over others. I like to play at a fast tempo and run plays for my teammates, as well as using screens to get my shot off. I also like the challenge of playing defense. I am able to use my quickness to stay in front of my player and play the passing lanes efficiently. Playing basketball for 6 years has helped build up my confidence, basketball IQ, and the ability to adapt to other coaching styles.
Education is also very important to me. I try my best to maintain good grades. I come from a family of educators so I understand that education and learning is a tool that I need to be successful. As a student, I see myself graduating with at least a Bachelors Degree and having a career helping and supporting other athletes.
