Being 5’10 in grade 7 may seem like a dream come true but for myself (and many others I’m sure) it came with its own set of challenges. The biggest being self-esteem. My grade 7 self would be shaking in her above-average size boots if she knew my height was now my absolute favourite thing about myself! However, it wasn’t magic that made my self-confidence skyrocket. It was VOLLEYBALL! Volleyball allowed me to love myself inside and out, and also made me realize that what made me different from my friends and stand out in a crowd (literally lol), was just the thing that made me special and enabled me to excel.
This experience inspired me to take a special interest in young tall athletes and mentor them on their sometimes goofily awkward paths to success. I did this by coaching at the first-ever “Tall Bandits” program within my volleyball club! This is another of the endless ways volleyball has helped me learn about myself and what is important to me. This program was a springboard for my passion for mentorship, be it on the court or in the classroom. I now do this through coaching beach & indoor, and tutoring math & physics.
