"Golf... really?" This was the reaction when I started to play in seventh grade. As much as I love to play the game, it has not always been easy. Being from New Hampshire, there are not many girls who play golf. I am usually the only girl in clinics at my local golf academy and I am the only girl on my high school golf team. In fact, it has been 10 years since there was another girl golfer at my high school until I came along. During the last two years, I have volunteered as a junior mentor at an LPGA Girls Golf Program at Atkinson Country Club. I want to give young girls the opportunities that I did not have. I can inspire others to be the best golfer and to apply the lessons of golf such as discipline, perseverance, and dedication to their everyday lives. Throughout the last 3 years, I have been a part of the New England PGA Jr. Tour where I have found camaraderie and encouragement with other girl golfers. I want to ensure that all girls have the opportunity and encouragement that I did not always have. Whether I play for pleasure or tournaments, or with girls or boys, I feel a sense of peace and am always focused. I apply this same focus in school as I strive to be the best student I can be. Throughout my high school career, I participated in many activities including the SHS golf team, the Salem High School Marching Band, the Salem Blue Devil Winter Percussion Ensemble, secretary of the SHS Band Council, President of Girls Who Code Club, and a member of the Salem High School National Honor Society. Participating in so many activities, I have learned how to balance academics and extracurriculars in a way that I am able to be successful in both.
