I am a Junior at The Tatnall School, my full name is Sharon Noël Currie, however I go by my middle name Noël. Many aspects of my life have made me who I am today. My supportive family, my close friends, and my passion for art all have contributed to my identity. Yet ice hockey remains the biggest influencer.
I’ve been skating since I was 5, but didn't start playing ice hockey until I was about 10. Before I played ice hockey, I tried many sports, pretty much every sport you could think of. None of them appealed to me the way hockey has. Every part of the game is captivating to me, from the ice to the culture, to the many friends I’ve made, to the wonderful coaches I’ve played for. Ice hockey quickly became a safe place for me to unwind and relax. I’ve come to realize what clicks for me isn't just being on the ice, but rather putting in effort and being able to see the payoff. Through playing hockey, I’ve come to learn that despite being a team sport, it often comes down to a personal effort and motivation that sways everyone. One bad apple will ruin the whole team spirit, this is why I make it a goal to include everyone and to be supportive and encouraging. I always strive to get better and enjoy my time on the ice while it lasts. I hope to take my skill and positive attitude with me to college hockey.
As for academics I strive to maintain my excellent grades and I aim to learn and grow everyday. I want to study to become a genetic engineer, and am very eager to engross myself in this field. I haven’t always had a love of learning nor been focused in school. It’s taken a lot of hard work to overcome my dyslexia, but with help, I was able to learn to overcome it. Having to work through this disability taught me that any obstacle in life just takes some hard work to surpass.
On top of my academic abilities and aside from my athletic ones, I dabble in traditional and digital art mediums. For all of my school life, Art class has been my favorite class and still is, especially now that I get to try all kinds of new art forms. I’m still growing and learning who I am but, I do know ice hockey will continue to shape me no matter where life takes me.
