Personal Statement

I was born in Pretoria, South Africa and moved to Canada when I was 5 years old, totally different environment and culture to adapt to, and don't get me started on the weather. But with my family,  I adapted, I learned a new way of living and I learned a new language, French as the official language of Quebec. My character is to overcome adversity, not just to be average, but to be the best that I can be.

It was immediately apparent  to me that to understand Canada's soul, I needed to understand hockey, so I started out playing boys hockey because that's all there was. The only ice I had ever seen was in my soft drink, I had never seen an ice rink before let alone skated on one. I was put into the deep end with Canadian kids, who yes, it’s true, are born with skates on. I struggled for a week or two, but I overcame and adapted. My competitive nature and drive to be number 1, saw me play Peewee AAA and Bantam AAA with the boys’ league. I also made team Quebec U13 and U18. I left my family in Canada and moved to a prep school in the U.S. (Northwood in Lake Placid), because that's what I needed to do to become better.

I have a goal to play in the NCAA D1 league and get an education I can be proud of. I have worked hard to have a GPA of 4.2 in 2022/23  school years, and I am proud of the achievements and success I have had so far. I am on the honor roll and Dean's list and intend to stay there. My interest is in sport science or sport medicine so I can be able to help young athletes like myself chase their goals. I dream to one day play for team Canada, to pull over my head the red and white Maple leaf Jersey, to feel part of something larger than myself and to give back to my adopted Country that has given so much to me.

My family has sacrificed allot for my sister and I, to move from South Africa to Canada to give us a better life, and to make sure I can follow my hockey dreams in the U.S. and to get a university education, and I don’t intent to let them down!

Club Information

  • Seasons of Club Experience
  • 8 seasons
  • 2022 Northwood Huskies U19 Tier 1 (U19 Tier 1)
  • Kristen currently plays defense right hand shot for the Huskies 2021/22 season and will continue with them next season
  • 2021 2021 Team Quebec U18 (U18 AAA)
  • This was the Provincial Team selected to play in the Canadian National Tournament in November 2021, but sadly was cancelled due to Covid. This selection process spaned over 6 months with a combine assessment and then multiple rounds of cuts until the squad of 20 was selected. I played in a tournament against Team Ontario near Toronto in November 2021.
  • 2019 2019 Quebec games team (South west region) - Juex du Quebec (Girls Bantam AAA)
  • The Jeux de Quebec is French for the Quebec games, it is a mini Olympic games which is held every 2 years, there is a winter and summer games on alternating years. The winter games has all the traditional winter sports you would expect in the Olympics and brings together all the best players from around the province. There are 15 regions within Quebec and each region will have selection camps to field a team to play in the tournament. What's unique is that for hockey it is only for the Bantam years kids so you will only have 1 opportunity to make the hockey team, if you get cut you will not have another opportunity as the games are only every 2 years. I was one of the very few players who made the team as peewee aged player and again in my Bantam year. I was the Captain of the team in 2019.
  • 2019 LSL Arsenal (Bantam AAA)
  • This was a big honor for me as I was one of only 2 girls to make a boys bantam AAA major team in Quebec that year, I was the only girl on my team and I had to work really hard to be accepted and show I am worthy, it was an awesome year.
  • 2018 LSL Arsenal (Bantam AAA)
  • Boys Bantam AAA In Montreal. I was nominated for best defenseman, most improved player and hardest working defenseman, I won the award for player who sacrifices the most for the team.
  • 2017 2017 Quebec games team (South west region) - Juex du Quebec (Girls Bantam AAA)
  • The Jeux de Quebec is French for the Quebec games, it is a mini Olympic hames which is hel every 2 years, there is a winter and summer games on alternating years. I was one of the very few players who made the team as peewee aged player and was the youngest player by 2 years in the girls hockey category. by making the team so young it meant that I would be able to play in the games again in my Bantam year so being one of very few players to have played in the games twice.
  • 2017 LSL Arsenal (Peewee AAA)
  • This has been one of my greatest achievements in sport so far, it was hard breaking into boys AAA and very few girls have that opportunity, this is when I really learned to play defense correctly under a good coach and start to have a real competitive streak take over. This was a pivotal year and propelled me into wanting more from the game.
  • 2017 U13 Team Quebec (U13 AAA)
  • This team took part in the Internal Peewee tournament in Quebec city against the boys team. This team is selected by Caroline Ouellette and is the only girls team alloed in the Peewee internal tournament.
