Not only do I love the sport of swimming, but more than that, I love being a part of a team of people who are all focused on helping each other become their best, who share goals, who work together in and out of the pool, and become so close to you that they are more than just friends. It is those people that make me feel like I belong and I am looking for that special group of people that I can call my "family" away from home.
I am a quiet and more reserved type of leader by nature and even though my parents might tell me to be more in the spotlight, I find that I am more comfortable when I am helping others to shine. There are many girls on my team who have never swam before or who are not on the varsity team, but they are just as important as anyone else. I find that helping my teammates in the water with their strokes or learning how to dive for the first time off a block, cheering for them at the end of the lane, and giving encouragement one-on-one is where I shine as a leader. It is through those other swimmers successes and being a part of that in some way that I feel I have had an impact in a positive way. Sometimes the focus is always on the fastest swimmer when it really should be about all swimmers and each swimmer reaching their goals thus collectively reaching team goals.
