Swimming may be considered an individual sport --- but what makes swimming great for me and keeps me going is having a TEAM.
Swimming against a clock and only worrying about the time you swim isn't what gets the best performance out of me. It's the buildup and the excitement being on a team, rivalries, knowing people are counting on you, wanting to do well for yourself and others - that's where you will get the best out of me. And I have not yet reached my max capacity in training --- so my max potential in performance is yet to come.
I prefer short course because I love the walls - and love the opportunity to swim outside.
I come from a super athletic family --- my mother was one of 5 kids who went to school on Division 1 athletic scholarships (cross country/track) and one of my uncles was ranked top 10 in the USA for ten straight years in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with three appearances in the Olympic Trials. The family has multiple all-American titles, and 6 of my 10 cousins have gone on to play collegiate sports. So one thing that makes me different than other recruits is that I don't just have family support system who thinks they know about success in sports -- they really do know how to succeed. And they all feel strongly that the secret to success in college is not overdoing it early on in life and preventing burnout. And not maximizing your body's potential as a 12 or 13-year-old...but gradually building your athletic training to gradually improve your performance.
