For as long as I can remember, I have been a swimmer. My mother taught me how to swim in our backyard pool at 6 months old. I grew up on a pool deck, watching my siblings go to swim practice twice a day. Swim meets on the weekends where typical. Then there were all of the airline miles we racked up, traveling to meets on the mainland. You can easily see that swimming is definitely in my blood! I’ve been competing in USA swimming since the age of 5. In my family that was a late start. My sister was 3 years old at her first meet.
Attending college as a student athlete was never a question. The only question was where will I end up? There are so many well respected universities, with great swim programs. The academy I attend has an extended day of 8:30am to 4:30pm; However, my day starts at 6am for swim, then a full day of college preparatory classes, and finally back to swim from 4:45pm to 6:45 pm. I feel that I am well prepared to meet the demand of balancing swimming and academics. For years I have been doing just that. Double days everyday, including dryland training. I am a National Honors Society Officer/Member, Student Body Officer, and Presidents List recipient. I maintain a 4.3 gpa. I recently announced my decision to pursue a college degree in environmental science.
I fully understand the hard work and commitment that it will take to be a successful student athlete in college, and I am ready to accept the challenges moving forward.
I thank you for taking the time to read my personal statement.
Very Respectfully,
Kiana
