I joined my first swim team at the age of 6 and have been in love with the sport ever since. What I truly adored about swimming wasn’t that you were competitive with other people, but that you were competitive with yourself. Swimming is a sport that really makes you push yourself beyond what you thought possible, both mentally and physically. I believe that is the key aspect which drew me in. I also believe that the environment that swimming fostered was vital to my success in the sport. Without the constant encouragement from my coaches and teammates, I would never have devoted so much time and effort into the sport I now adore.
Although swimming is my main sport, I also play lacrosse at my school as the goalie. It was a difficult position to take up as I started my freshman year with little experience, but after working hard on my skill set with my coach, I grew to enjoy it. It was a lot different from swimming as you had to work with those around you as opposed to by yourself and I think that difference helped me understand the importance of building bonds with your teammates. I was then able to apply this lesson that I learned to other aspects of my life including swimming and my pre-existing friendships.
I am excited to learn more about the college swimming environment and how I could help benefit that environment with my charisma and confidence.
