I have a wide range of academic, athletic and personal interests, and I feel that my ultimate purpose is to somehow help improve the lives of others. As a result, I would like to combine my love of Biology, History, Art, my creative sense, swimming and Community Service to pursue a career that can directly and positively impact local, national and even global issues.
My college experience needs to be one that helps me continue a personal journey I started in 2012 when my swim coach Larry, told me, “Get out of survival mode and you will get to where you want to be!” That same year, while working on an ELA project, I found an Einstein quote that described me: “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” I knew then I didn’t want to be “insane”, nor in survival mode anymore! I had always worked hard, “hoping” for better results. However, fear of failure kept me in my comfort zone. What did successful people do? I found out and immediately started emulating them. I made short-term and long-term goals for school, swimming and personal pursuits. This included finding motivational videos online, listening to them, and repeating them to myself all day, every day. As my determination and discipline increased, I made more changes. I improved my study habits, made changes to my eating habits, stretched more to increase flexibility, did more dryland endurance training, and increased swim practice days.
Discipline, perseverance, resilience, and a genuine concern for others, have kept me working hard every day to reach my full potential. This journey is far from over. The traits and skills I have developed and will continue to develop, will keep me striving to do my best and help others along the way.
