My name is Margie Winter, I am 17 years old, and am currently a junior in high school. I am enrolled in several honors programs and AP classes and am planning on continuing some college level courses next year as well. In addition to these classes I also participate in a few leadership programs in and out of school, such as YES Leads and Leaders Club. Outside of school, my passions include swimming and art.
I began swimming in 5th grade and I haven’t stopped since. The first team I swam with was the local YMCA team. I swam with them for the 6 years prior to this year. I also swim for the local club team, called the Greater Chenango Aquatics Team, and the high school varsity team. Finally, I am a member of the Federated States of Micronesia International Swimming Team. Lastly, I served as “Manager” for the boys’ varsity swimming and diving team this past season. You can find a detailed history of all my swimming activity on my website which is www.margiewinter.com.
I am so grateful that I am able to swim internationally for my home country because I have been able to meet so many new people (including amazing professional swimmers who I have looked up to throughout my entire swimming career), make so many new friends, and experience the different cultures each country and community have to offer. It has truly been an amazing past two years! I hope to continue doing this for many more years to come and I would like to go to a college or university that will give me the training I need in order to continue to compete successfully on an international level. I would prefer a D3 or D2 school on the east coast, preferably more to the south, that would not only satisfy my need for athletic training but also would have exceptional academic programs that offer majors in art and business.
By far, the most exciting international meet that I have competed in was the Youth Olympic Games that took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in October, 2018. Here is a link to an interview with the Pacific Daily News following winning my heat in the 50-meter freestyle.
Art has been a main interest of mine since even before I became a swimmer. In elementary school and middle school, I was always enrolled in the art enrichment classes which were only offered to students with exceptional skills in art. Now in high school, I have taken studio art, photography, and drawing & painting. Next year I plan on taking advanced drawing and painting because that’s the form of art I have taken the most liking to. Art has always been something I love to do and am happy doing but I'm not sure as to if I would want to major in it during college. If anything I would probably just minor so that I don't get tired of doing it.
As it's looking right now, I will most likely be majoring in International relations, cultural studies, or anthropology. I love learning about new cultures and all different types of people so these are the majors that allow me to do that. I also love traveling and I hope that I will be able to find a career in one of these fields that lets me go to new countries and help or teach communities.
