My name is Misa Miyashiro and I am currently attending Mililani High School as a senior (c/o 2021). I've pursued a running career of track and field, and cross-country for 3 years (2018-2020).
During my freshman year of high school, a friend tried to convince me to join cross-country, and track and field but I pushed it aside because I didn't see myself as a potential runner, and I was competing in soccer on a team outside of school. However, my friend saw it as a potential sport that I would thrive in and be able to have fun in. During my sophomore year, I decided to give cross-country a try and started off-season training with the team during the summer. As I continued training with the team, I grew a passion for running because the people I was surrounded with were so supportive and loving, and the environment wasn't like any other sport I experienced. In my previous sport, soccer, the environment was tense and negative but cross-country was a safe place of love, support, and compassion for each other. By the end of my cross-country season, I considered joining track and field, and ran the 1500m and 3000m. Right before championship meets, my coach convinced me to run the 800m to see where I would place and if it was a potential event where I would thrive in. The next meet, I ran the 800m for the first time at 2:41, 9 seconds away from states. I was able to qualify for OIA trials for both the 1500m and 800m as a sophomore and had the experience to run with other outstanding runners. As of now, I am currently running the 800m, 1500m, and 4x4, and competed at states for my cross-country season (2019-2020).
As a runner, these 2 sports have taught me many lessons that don't apply only on the field but also off the field. It taught me to push myself beyond limits and that anything is possible once you put your mind to it. I have followed the quote, "Great things never come from comfort zones," which has continually helped me throughout training and running my races. I am a motivated runner and promise to give my 100% on and off the field. I am determined and self-driven to always put my best efforts forward, and am always striving to improve.
Also as a student, I am focused and determined to always put my best work forward on assignments and exams. I am able and capable of balancing both my sports and school, putting 100% of my energy into both.
