My name is Saskia Lawson, and I am a senior at Bronx Academy of Health Careers, located on the Evander Childs Educational Campus in The Bronx, NY. I have been passionate about track and field since I started running in second grade, and for the past 10 years, I’ve worked diligently to develop my skills. My primary event is the 100m hurdles, which I love, but I also compete in the long jump and the 200m. I currently hold school records for the 55m hurdles (8.6) and 100m hurdles (14.9), as well as the long jump (16'6). I was also ranked #2 in the Bronx for the 100m hurdles, which is one of my greatest achievements so far.
This past indoor season, I had the opportunity to compete at the Nike Indoor Nationals, where I advanced to the semifinals. Although I didn’t make the finals, it was a valuable learning experience. In June 2024, I also competed at the Adidas Nationals in North Carolina, where I unfortunately didn’t advance to the semifinals. However, each competition pushes me to keep improving and refining my technique, and I’m motivated to perform even better in future meets.
At the Citywide Track & Field Championship, I placed 4th in the finals for the 100m hurdles, and I was honored to be named Female Athlete of the Year at Evander Childs. These experiences reflect my commitment to my sport and my determination to continue pushing my limits.
As a student-athlete, I understand the importance of balancing both academics and athletics. Currently, I maintain an 87 average across all my classes, and the discipline I’ve gained through sports has translated into success in the classroom. Managing my time between school and training has taught me resilience, focus, and the ability to set and achieve goals in both areas.
Looking ahead, I am committed to competing at the collegiate level and continuously improving my personal bests. My ultimate goal is to have a meaningful career in track and field, with the hope of one day becoming a professional athlete. My experiences have equipped me with the skills to stay focused, accept constructive criticism, and remain motivated through challenges, both in practice and in competition.
