Recently I have opened my eyes to some of the troubles that are tormenting our world today. I’ve become interested in many Issues such as climate change, abortion, and LGBTQ+ rights. But the issue that is closest to my heart and strikes a chord deep within me is the campaign against gun violence.
I am the child of immigrants living in a St. Lucian household in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn. Growing up as the eldest daughter of the household I faced a lot of different stereotypes such as not being able to talk back and do what I was told, and all cooking and cleaning chores were mine, not my brothers, not my parents, only mine. On the other hand, living in this household does allow me to concentrate on school and sports with loved ones who care, love, and support me.
The absence of gun violence in my immediate neighborhood has allowed me to focus on my education and sports. I was lucky enough to grow up shielded from the harsh realities of gun violence. It is this privilege that fuels my passion to address the campaign against gun violence as it truly captured my attention four years ago when I had the opportunity to be part of an Anti-Gun program.
Having this eye-opening experience and still being part of this program today has helped expose me to the harsh realities that these communities are facing. Not only the communities but the world as a whole. It’s sad to witness the real-world consequences that gun violence brings. Countless numbers of families that’ll either be hurt, in fear, or worse they’ll want to retaliate.
On a more personal level, being a part of this program for as long as I have has helped me further solidify my commitment to this cause. Having to hear an innumerable amount of stories told about innocent people mainly youth losing their lives daily over the senseless acts of violence. It hurts to stand idly by while society continues to grasp the catastrophic effects of gun violence. Taking heed of these stories ignited a fire within me to take action.
In response to this urgent issue, I've actively participated in initiatives aimed at raising awareness and advocating for change. Whether it's organizing community events, joining local organizations, or engaging in conversations with peers, I put myself out there and go all out to educate others, especially the youth about the importance of gun violence prevention and the need for stricter regulations.
I’m very grateful that my involvement has not only shaped my perspective but it has also played a significant role in my personal growth. I’ve developed extreme empathy towards those who've been affected by gun violence. Deep down knowing that all these struggles and pains could have easily been my struggle and pain. Knowing this caused me to be persuaded and determined to create a safer society where every individual can live without fear of gun violence.
In conclusion, my journey has led me to realize and become more aware of the urgency in addressing the campaign against gun violence. I am determined to raise awareness, work in any way to help make a change, and work towards creating a society where the sound of gunshots is replaced with the sweet harmony of peace. I am willing to pursue a career path that will allow me to make a tangible difference towards the fight against gun violence. I want to be someone who makes an impact. Whether it be through studying law to advocate for stricter gun control, psychology to provide support to survivors. It can even be me becoming a nurse to help improve on the medical side of things. My goal is to contribute to the eradication of gun violence and create a safer world and environment for all.
