For as long as I can remember, track & field has been an important part of my life. Because of my love for the sport, I’m dedicated to doing what it takes to be the best I can be. I’ve been running track since I was 5 years old and when I entered 7th grade, I started running on the Varsity track team at Olmsted. It was during this transition that the hobby of running grew into a passion. Since the 7th grade, I have had the great privilege and honor to not only qualify for but also medal in the NYSPHAA State Championships.
Since my freshman year, I’ve had the great honor of being a captain of my Cross Country and Track teams. I enjoy being able to lead as an example for my teammates. It was also during my freshman year that my school had our first indoor track team, which really helped me excel in my outdoor season. On the second day of the State Championship of the outdoor season of 2018, I was slated to win all of my races that day and was prepared to run in federations for the 400, 200, and 100. I had already won the state title for the 400m when I ended up pulling my hamstring in my 100m final and not able to finish out my season the way I had aspired. Admittedly, this was a really hard experience that I have had to endure and at first, I did not think that I would overcome this obstacle.
The experience of being injured and the recovery process has taught me much about hard work and perseverance. The process of recovery gave me a stronger commitment and dedication to the sport. Even now with the effects of COVID-19 cancelling my junior season, I am again reminded of the importance of dedicating myself to a purpose even though the circumstances are less than ideal. I can't say for sure what the future holds but my desire for college is to continue to be highly competitive, with the hopes of one day running at the professional level. My goal is to find a school that will help me grow and flourish, both academically and athletically.
Thank you for taking the time to read this personal statement!
