My name is Madison Pompey and I am an athlete for Westover High School. I run Track/field and Cross Country. My main events are the 1600 and the 800, but I also run the 4x800 relay.
During my sports physical of the 2016-2017 school year, I found out that I had scoliosis and I had to have surgery. I ended up running Cross Country and I was able to run one meet of indoor track because my surgery was scheduled for December 20th. I ended up staying in the hospital for 6 to 7 days, the doctor told me I needed to stay in shape in order for my back to stay strong and I knew I still wanted to run. My recovery went well and the doctor released me to run again by February 6th and by that time it was outdoor season. I wasn't all that great at running when I returned but after I finished the season I was determined to get better, so I worked hard all summer and I did what I had to do to get my time down. I am happy to say that my PR during freshman year was a 7:15 and after my sophomore year, my PR is now a 6:22.
As a student-athlete, I realize that however you are in the classroom, is most likely how you are when it comes to practice and the actual sport. I've learned that what you put in is what you get out and now that I've seen the improvement in my times, I can't wait to see how much more I can improve. Lastly, the most important thing I've learned is to never give up and to keep trying, because I've realized that everyone has a bad day but what matters is how well you get back up.
