Writing this statement makes me reflect on how far I have progressed in my 5 years of playing volleyball. When my mother first suggested I join a team I had very little knowledge about volleyball and only knew the basic terminology which was serving, spiking, and rotating. I originally started playing to meet friends, then I realized I was pretty good and it was fun. I am a goal-oriented person therefore each year I played I would set a goal. One year I focused on my form and being a stronger server. The following year I decided to increase my overall understanding of the rules of the game. My third year of playing club volleyball was a struggle because I got hurt during the last tournament and couldn’t play until March the following season. This was hard for me because my goal that year was to improve on my jumps and touching the ball more. I didn’t let not being able to play tournaments get me down instead I focused on being there for the team. I never missed a practice and trained safely. I cheered my team on when I could get to tournaments. Being sidelined proved to me that I am more committed to volleyball than I initially thought. This year I was selected as the captain of my high school volleyball team because of all the hard work and dedication I put forth. In retrospect, I can say that I have achieved my goals and more. I realized that there are girls who may be more passionate and slightly more talented than me in volleyball however I know that I am eager to learn, I show up all the time ready to play, and I practice hard and give it my all at all times.
