As the youngest of three sisters, I was the only one to secure a position as a Student Council Officer. I worked alongside four boys to better our middle school community. As the only female officer, I learned two important lessons that I took into high school: to be vocal with my opinions and be a positive leader. Leadership has helped me to reach outside my comfort zone and this passed junior year I sought the position of Student Council President. Although I lost in the election, the experience enabled me to grow more confidence in public speaking, and in myself, through campaigning. My competitive, determined nature would not allow me to surrender to this loss, which led to me securing the title of President of our New York State Science Honors Society where I am still able to bring needed positive changes to our student body. For me, a leader is not about popularity but the chance to make a difference. As captain of my JV Volleyball team, I was able to bring positive energy and spark a sense of community to a team of sophomores and freshmen who had never worked together. Our team thrived and although we did not win the championship that season we defeated one of most challenging rivals. This year I established and am leading a new service club at school called “Girls for Days.” The club works in conjunction with the Sisters at Marian Woods who inspired me when I volunteered there last year. Our output is to make washable feminine pads for girls in Africa enabling female students there to attend school during menstruation so that they can fulfill their passions.
Having a desire to make a difference has sparked me to pursue a career in medicine. Quite recently, my five-year-old cousin was diagnosed with Leukemia. Being able to keep just one more angel such as herself in this world motivates me to become a part of the medical field, where I know I can influence lives, and create a better future.
