It is my belief that a leader cannot lead solely through words and orders, they have to lead by example. They have to be able to listen to, understand, learn from, and when needed, help educate others. In volleyball, flexibility and a willingness to make changes is a key for success as a team and a player. Over the last several years of playing, my teams were lacking certain positions. I recognized what spots were needed and took the initiative to adjust my skills accordingly. This is also something I felt myself doing the same as I grew up. I saw the need for volunteers and first responders in my community so I acted. I regularly participate in Habitat For Humanity fundraisers that make it possible to help with both rehabilitating deteriorated neighborhoods and building housing for those who are seeking to own a home but may not be able to afford it otherwise. When I saw that people struggled to find the food they needed I took part in C.R.O.P. Walk fundraisers and volunteer at my local food pantry organizing and assisting in the distribution of food. When I turned 16, I joined the volunteer fire department to try and help my neighbors through tough times. Doing so much for my community has led me to develop leadership skills that not many people have at my age. It has started me on a path toward my future of serving others. After college, I plan to join the United States Air Force and start a career of being a first responder. With these goals in mind, I want to continue to play volleyball in college and earn a degree in a field that will allow me to help and serve others. My goals for my playing future are getting a higher vertical, gaining more upper body strength and to get a certain mentality that will give me more understanding of others. After using these and other opportunities to strengthen my leadership skills, I will strive to serve my country and community.
