I believe that I have come a long way since my early years. I did not start speaking till I was four years old. My parents took me to doctor after doctor and they told them that I was stubborn and refused to talk, just letting my older brother speak for me. It was not till my mom took me for my kindergarten physical that I was diagnosed with hearing loss. My mom was able to get an appointment the following day with an ENT doctor and shortly there after I was getting my first of two sets of tubes put in both ears. The same doctors who said I was stubborn are also the ones who would diagnose me with single and double ear infections, one after the other. I was basically deaf for most of my early years.
Because I was deaf and didn't get tubes till I was almost five my speech was severely delayed. When all my friends were learning to spell, I was learning how to pronounce each letter and speak where I could be understood. I was in speech class all through elementary school and middle school and finally graduated out when I hit high school. I also began to see a new ENT doctor who diagnosed me as being tongue tied. The doctor did a minor procedure in his office resulting in additional and immediate improvement. I know wrestling and my teammates helped me through all of the tough times.
I was always shy and stayed in the background because I was embarrassed on how difficult it was to understand me. Now however, there is no holding me back. I have been wrestling on the Varsity team since 9th grade. This year I will be one of the team leaders. I love the mat, the room, my teammates, and yes even the drilling. My grades put me on the A/B honor roll. I help my family with sales when they set up a booth at comic cons, and have no problem approaching customers and helping them. And finally, I also help my dad who is a Private Investigator, he is court appointed for indigent criminal clients. I help in his office and in the field with him. It is very rewarding to help someone get back to their family when they should not have been locked up to begin with.
I would like you to know that I am a fighter, and I don't give up. My goals are to finish college with a degree, be a college wrestler, be an All-American, and stand on the podium at the NCAAS. I hope to also give it back one day helping out the next generation of wrestlers, and promoting the sport.
Thank you for all of your time and consideration.
Respectfully,
Wyatt Gentile
