Dear Coaches,
My name is Tyler Cowell. I started wrestling in 1st grade at the local club, however with the club closing I didn't pursue other avenues of training due to my interest in soccer at the time. Starting my 6th grade year they had reopened the club under a new coach and I started my training back, and that's when I really started to enjoy the aspect of wrestling and competing. My seventh grade year I went 7-1, eighth grade year I went 9-1 and placed second in the county. In between seventh and eighth grade I did various youth tournaments and didn't fare very well. This started the fuel for my desire to better myself and to have better results. In between eighth and ninth grade I was competing and youth tournaments and doing fairly well, but then covid hit and shut down all of the youth tournaments. However I continued to find training anywhere I could, even up to multiple hours away. My ninth grade year I was limited to match numbers because of covid, but I finished third at conference, fourth at regionals, and even qualified for the state tournament. In the state tournament I lost my first match and could not wrestle back because of covid. In between ninth and tenth grade there were not many options for camps due to covid, however I continued too train where ever I could find. I did a few tournaments where I placed first and was competing at Virginia's I-64 duels where I wrestled 2 matches and won both but I hurt my knee in the second match. Due to injury I had to sit out the first 6 weeks of the high school season. But after my return I am 25-2 and have won multiple tournaments including conference and had a fourth place finish at the WRAL tournament. My high school wrestling career is to be continued...
