Personal Statement

My name is Jakob Bretstein and I am an expected 2024 graduate from Schreiber High School in Port Washington, New York and play primarily SS and some 2B as well. I also play for our town’s travel teams, the Port Washington Legends and Vikings. I strongly believe that my ability, work ethic and motivation, both on and off the field, would make me an asset to your program.

I’m 5’10” 135 lbs. and I play a fluid and smooth shortstop. My raw arm strength has been measured at 81 mph from SS. Additionally, I have recorded 80 MPH exit velocity in workouts. I run a current 7.2 60- yard dash as a shortstop.

I made Schreiber High School’s varsity baseball team in Spring of 2022 as a sophomore and won the starting shortstop job by beating out 3 seniors and 2 juniors. I led our team in fielding percentage and was awarded the Gold Glove by our coaches and team for the season. I also helped lead our team to the playoffs for the first time since 2019.

As a member of the Port Washington Legends travel team, I helped lead our team to the finals of the Long Island Hot Stove Varsity Summer League’s championship game as their starting shortstop. I led the team in fielding percentage and had the lowest number of errors. This past fall, I helped lead our Port Washington Vikings Travel Team made up of the school’s varsity and j.v. players to the Fall League Long Island Boys of Summer championship as their starting shortstop and some-time 2nd baseman.

I currently have a 3.5 GPA at Schreiber High School in Port Washington. I am scheduled to take my SAT on March 11th, 2023. My academic strengths reside in my core courses of Spanish, English, and Social Studies (US History)). I’m interested in the field of sports psychology, and this would be my anticipated major.

  • Coaches Notes and Eval - Jakob, Here is your evaluation from the showcase, we graded each player based on defense, arm, and swing. The scale is: 1- Below Average 2- High School Average 3- Potential College Player 4- D-1 Prospect 5- MLB Prospect Arm- 3 Swing- 3.5 Defense- 4 Notes: Offensively you showed a good swing with some power. Make sure you are consistently keeping your swing short and compact through the zone. Defensively you showed good footwork, range and actions in the infield. Continue to work on your arm strength, we would recommend a long toss program. We look forward to seeing you play again in the future. Good Luck and continue to work hard! • Coaches Eval- 07/16/2022 - Baseball Factory National World Series at IMG Academy- Session 1 (HS) Jakob continues to shine on the diamond with his baseball abilities and did so at the IMG World Series. At SS, feet are active as he displays proper footwork as he works to square ground balls and plays through with his body. Glove action is clean and presents out front. He moves well laterally with range improving as he increases foot quickness. Throws are accurate but will benefit by building more arm strength through a long toss program. At the plate, he shows a tall setup. Hands are quick and work through a level swing path. He stays inside the ball, utilizing all fields through a line drive approach. Lower half works well through the swing with an aggressive hip turn. Mental makeup is a plus as he has a positive attitude, works hard, and is very coachable.
