My name is Joel Saunders-Triplett, and I play varsity basketball for Berkeley Carroll High School in New York. I started playing basketball when I was four years old, after my mom told me I couldn’t play football. At first, I didn’t enjoy the sport, but over time, as I spent more time with the game, I grew to love it.
Basketball has changed my life in so many ways. It has allowed me to build strong relationships, travel to new places, and open doors to opportunities I never imagined. Due to COVID, I didn’t start playing competitively until 8th grade. That was the year I truly saw my growth and realized how my hard work was beginning to pay off.
As a freshman, I earned a starting spot on Junior Varsity, leading my team to the best record in our league. Unfortunately, we fell short in the semifinals. That summer, I was determined to work on my game—improving my basketball IQ, shooting, and playmaking. When I moved up to Varsity, those skills translated immediately. I made the right reads, knocked down open threes, and created scoring opportunities for my teammates. Despite being the youngest player on the team, I was able to make an immediate impact.
This spring and summer, I’ll be competing with a stronger AAU team, showcasing my skills in front of college coaches during live period events. These opportunities will help me get on coaches’ radars and push me toward my ultimate goal—playing Division 1 basketball. By my junior summer, I want to be the best version of myself as a player, ready to take on the next level.
