For me, the game of golf was definitely not love-at-first-site. In fact, if you were to ask 8-year-old Evan how I felt about the game of golf, I would have responded with “I hate it!”.
Growing up I was always a basketball player and never thought golf was my thing. However, over the pandemic, golf became an instant hit. Each day, I would logout of my zoom calls and quickly pack up my bag and head to practice. Through each swing, I realized that this was a game I could appreciate for the rest of my life, but I knew I was far behind in comparison to my peers. So, over the past 3 years, I have been playing catch up, earning the name “two a day” in the process.
Freshman year I made the JV team while getting to be first Varsity alternate. While getting to practice with much more talented players, I was inspired to work harder than ever. Unfortunately right at the start of the offseason going into my sophomore year, I was hit with a devastating injury, a stress fracture in my rotator cuff. Having to take 5 months off from golf. When I got back I lost a lot of confidence in my abilities. I always was 60-75 yards behind off the tee compared to my playing partners. Last offseason I worked incredibly hard to fix that margin. With determination, I have been able to increase my abilities tremendously, including gaining 30 mph of club head speed in a span of under a year.
Playing all year round now for tournaments over the past two years. I was able to lower my scoring average from 86.2 to 78.5 on all tournament events this year alone. My strengths include distance wedges, scrambling abilities, shot creativity, and clutch putting. During the off-season, I practice at The Golf Practice and am a member of the Mastery 360 program for some of the most elite golfers in my area. This stellar program includes competitive group training/competitions, individual training/swing work, and speed training with Mach 3 speed devices and several trackman systems.
I am only getting started with my golf journey. With my enthusiasm, empathy, and determination, I know that I have so much to offer as a player and teammate and would love nothing more than to play competitive college golf at a college or university that offers an opportunity to further my education.
