Personal Statement

I am a dedicated and determined player that has played many positions.  Because of my speed and quickness, I have enjoyed and been successful playing as a forward.  I have good field vision and have played in the midfield as an attacking midfielder.  I am also willing to engage on defense and I have often rotated in the left back position.  Being a part of a team has taught me the importance of communication and adapting to new circumstances.  What makes me different from other recruits is that I am also a student of the game of soccer and like to understand game strategy.  I enjoy watching college & professional soccer, learning about game strategy and helping my team mates see the field in a similar way.  I have played soccer since I was 4 years old starting with recreational clubs and advancing to travel teams by age 11.  Academically, I am a smart and hard working student.  I have always been a high A student and understand what it takes to balance school work, playing sports and extra curricular activities.

Good in tight spaces, and makes good use of moves to beat defenders. Finishing - Has a knack for being in the right places, looks to score, and has the ability to finish. Tactical Abilities - 95 / 100 Vision - Field vision is very good. Constantly checking over shoulders on and off ball allows for quick decisions. Speed Of Thought - Has good ideas and tries to play fast. This will only help future growth. Physical Abilities - 95 / 100 Endurance - Great work rate throughout camp. Showed endurance that helped effectiveness, especially late. Speed - Great speed overall, in particular when running into space. Will be an important asset going forward. Mental Abilities - 95 / 100 Competitiveness - Showed a strong desire to win and seems to enjoy the competition. Keep working hard! Confidence - Great confidence, didn’t shy away when challenged at camp and played with a sense of urgency. Coach's Comments Ryan Smith is very coachable, and I enjoyed working with him at this week’s camp. Ryan had a great attitude. His best abilities are Finishing and Speed. As a member of the 2022 graduating class, Ryan Smith has room to grow into a college soccer player. He needs to work on further Defending and Defensive Awareness. Good footwork and positioning will help you dominate the midfield defensively. You must understand team defensive schemes and positioning, and angles. The position you play requires you to challenge the ball in the air.

Mental Abilities - 89 / 100 Coachable - Responds well to coaching. Asked good questions and seemed to enjoy the learning process. Team Player - Great team-first attitude. Was encouraging and supportive to teammates throughout camp. Coach's Comments Ryan proved to be very coachable and willing to learn throughout the 4 sessions. His work ethic and competitiveness really stood out when among his peers. At his age, Ryan has already shown the ability to take players on with confidence and I'm confident he will continue to grow this aspect of his game. As he continues to progress, Ryan looks like he can be a very dangerous player in the attacking third at the collegiate level. Throughout the camp, you showed that you can take players on and win your individual battles, however, your end product wasn't always consistent. As a player that looks to take players on, it is important that you improve your end product once you have gotten passed a player in the attacking third. Dangerous crosses, shots on target, or even a forward pass will help you grow substantially. Many players coming out of high school need to improve all aspects of their athleticism when going into the college game. Players are older, faster, stronger, and smarter than what you would normally be used to. Improving your overall strength, balance, agility, and explosiveness will give you a big advantage when taking on defenders who would normally be more athletic than you. Take players on. If its in the attacking third and you are 1v1, go at him. I cannot stress this enough. Have the confidence to say "I'm going to get past you every time." As an attacking player, things may not be going your way during a game and its easy to put your head down. Don't. All it takes is you beating the defender once to create a goal scoring chance.

  • Ryan is a tricky forward who tends to put himself in good positions to score. Look to be sharper with your passes and work on combining more with others. This will lead to more goal scoring opportunities. Coach Matt Coreia, Salem State University

  • Nice goal and composure in the 2nd match. Continue to use your stride to get by players. Start to focus on the technical side of the game to add to your pace. Great week. - Coach Jose Gomez, Charleston Southern University
