My sophomore year I had the honor of taking part in the Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup. This tournament not only taught me the value in winning, but also the importance in perseverance, which in my eyes is one of my finest characteristics. Going into such a big event, being a club from unknown Spokane didn’t hold much notoriety. Every game, we were seen as less than the opposing team. The night before the first game, the team managers were having registration issues. As a result, one of our players was ineligible to play. So, after the first day of being in Vegas, my team was already facing hardship. Worst of all, in the warm-up of our first game, a strong and reliable player on my team broke his leg taking his first shot on goal. But to me, none of that mattered, because negative things can’t overpower what you want to accomplish. Over the course of the weekend I didn’t allow the grief we were facing to get the best of me. I worked to win as many tackles, 50-50 balls, and headers as I possibly could! After all the grittiness, I was too blind to notice that we had won every single game, without conceding a single goal. On top of that we took home a championship. I rode back to Spokane with a medal around my neck, a trophy in my hand and the feeling of knowing that I gave it my all! This story matters because it shows that I will never give up on my team, no matter the circumstances.
