Personal Statement

Hi, my name is Carlos Masuko.  I am currently a student enrolled in Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi Campus located in Keaʻau on the island of Hawaiʻi.  Over the years, through the trial of many sports, I have found that running is the sport that I am passionate about.  It has always been a goal of mine to attend college, and I am hopeful that running will open many opportunities for my future.

My parents have influenced me the greatest.  From a young age, I was taught the idea of hard work, discipline, and integrity.  This is evident in my success in my academics.  Being the oldest of four children has taught me to be self-reliant but also kind.  These attributes make me coachable and allow me to get along well with my fellow teammates.  Attending Kamehameha Schools, a college preparatory school, taking honors and advanced placement classes, and being involved in extracurricular clubs have taught me the skill of time management and efficiency.

These skills have allowed me to be successful in athletics as well.  In my freshman year, I was able to qualify for the state meet which allowed my team to have a scoring team at states for the first time in a few years.  As a sophomore, my placement at the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Championships for cross country allowed my team to beat the defending champions and place first.  This was the first time in school history that any boys cross country team from Kamehameha Schools Hawaiʻi Campus won the league championships.  In my sophomore track season, my hard work manifested itself in a new school record in the 3000m.  As a Junior, the hard work of my cross country team and myself was exemplified in our repeat as league champions.  I was able to lead the team to its highest placing at the state cross country meet in school history (4th).

Overall, I look forward to embracing and adapting to whatever challenges the future has in store for me, and I am excited to set up a strong foundation that can set me up for success in the future.
